What low self-worth actually sounds like

It does not sound like I am not enough. It sounds ordinary.

Almost nobody arrives saying they have low self-esteem. They arrive describing a specific, reasonable sounding worry, and it turns out there is one underneath all of them.

  • Rewriting a message four times before sending it.
  • Reading a short reply as evidence that someone is annoyed with you.
  • Saying yes when everything in you meant no.
  • Deflecting a compliment before it has finished landing.
  • Feeling like you are performing a version of yourself at work.
  • Being fine until one piece of feedback undoes the week.

How the work goes

Worth is built underneath, not talked into place.

01

Find where the standard came from

The bar you are failing to meet was set by something. Usually it was set early, by someone whose approval mattered, and it has not been reviewed since.

02

Separate the critic from the fact

The critical voice speaks in a tone that sounds like objectivity. Learning to hear it as a voice, with a history and a job, is what takes the authority out of it.

03

Stop outsourcing the verdict

When worth is decided by other people's reactions, every room becomes an assessment. We work on holding an opinion of yourself that other people are allowed to disagree with.

04

Practice it where it counts

Self-worth that only exists in session is not self-worth yet. The work moves into the conversations, the messages and the rooms where it usually collapses.

A common misunderstanding

Confidence is not the same thing as self-worth.

Plenty of people are confident in specific settings and still believe, underneath, that they have to earn the right to be liked. You can present a talk to forty people and go home and replay one facial expression for three hours. Those two things live at different depths.

That is why advice to fake it, stand taller or list your achievements so often fails. It is aimed at the performance rather than at the belief driving it. The work here is slower and it is aimed lower down.

Common questions

A few honest things before you book.

Is low self-esteem something therapy can actually change?
Self-worth is learned, which means it can be examined and, over time, revised. Progress usually looks like noticing the critical voice earlier, recovering faster after criticism, and needing less reassurance from other people, rather than waking up one day feeling great about yourself.
I do well at work. Can I still have a self-esteem problem?
Yes, and it is very common. High achievement is often a coping strategy for low self-worth rather than evidence against it. Many people succeed precisely because failure feels unsurvivable, which is exhausting and rarely reads as a problem from the outside.
Do I need to talk about my childhood?
Not on any schedule. Where a belief about your worth came from is usually useful information, but we go there when it is relevant and when you are ready, not because a form says session three covers family history.
How is this different from body image work?
They overlap constantly. Body image struggles are often self-worth struggles that have attached themselves to appearance. Some people come in for one and find the other underneath it, and the work moves accordingly.
