Before your first session.
UnitedHealthcare is among the New York plans this practice accepts. For most members that means paying a copay at each session rather than the full fee, with sessions available by video anywhere in New York or in person at the Patchogue office.
Coverage varies by plan, employer and deductible even within the same insurer, so verify your own benefits before your first session. The number on the back of your card is the fastest route, and the question to ask is whether outpatient mental health telehealth is covered and what your copay or deductible is.
UnitedHealthcare members are frequently administered through Optum for behavioral health, so if your card or member portal points you there, that is normal and it is the same practice either way.

- How do I find out my copay?
- Call the member services number on your card and ask about outpatient mental health, including telehealth, and about your deductible. That gives you the real number rather than an estimate.
- Can I use out of network benefits instead?
- Some plans reimburse a portion of out of network care. If yours does, that is worth raising at the consult so you know what you would actually be paying.
