What to know
Before your first session.
Aetna is one of the New York plans this practice is in network with, which for most members means a copay rather than the full session fee. Sessions are virtual anywhere in New York or in person at the Patchogue office, and telehealth is generally covered the same way in network care is, though the specifics belong to your plan rather than to me.
Coverage varies by plan, employer and deductible even within the same insurer, so verify your own benefits before your first session. The number on the back of your card is the fastest route, and the question to ask is whether outpatient mental health telehealth is covered and what your copay or deductible is.
If it turns out your particular plan does not cover this, that is worth knowing before you start rather than after a claim is denied. Private pay is available and there is a sliding scale, so cost is a reasonable thing to raise directly in the free consult.
Common questions
About cover and cost.
- Does Aetna cover therapy for body image concerns?
- Insurers cover medically necessary outpatient mental health care rather than paying by topic. Whether your particular plan covers a course of therapy depends on your benefits, which is worth confirming with Aetna before your first session.
- Will Aetna cover video sessions?
- Telehealth is generally covered in the same way as in person outpatient care, and it has been standard for several years now. Plans do vary, so confirm it applies to yours.
- What if I have an Aetna plan through an employer outside New York?
- The deciding factor is usually the plan's network rather than the state on the card, and it is exactly the kind of thing to check before booking. Bring what you find to the consult and we can work out whether it makes sense.
Other plans
Also accepted, and private pay.
Cost is a fair thing to ask about first.
Fifteen minutes, free, and bringing up money in it is completely normal rather than awkward.
